Department of Engineering.
Practical Exercises
To conduct the practical session you will require:
-
Direct access to a UNIX system ( sandbox) or access via telnet
from a client PC .
-
You need to keep a log of the exercises as you complete them log
the results. This should be a text-processor document that can be emailed
to me. Date the time and date of each exercise and record the results of
your work. Remember you can cut and paste this into a Linux document and
then just ftp it to a local machine to email to me.
-
About 1 hour of time for each exercise.
Note
Each student should arrange to conduct the exercises at a time convenient
to her/himself. This is a self-paced set of exercises, and there will be
no specific laboratory time allocated to do the 4 exercises.
The exercises naturally follow one another and build on the experience
of the previous exercises. They do not however need to be attempted one
after another in a single 1 hour period. The four exercises may more easily
be done on 4 separate occasions. Students may attempt an exercise at any
time during the course, but much of the material will not be covered until
the series of lectures on Internet Protocol in the final weeks of the course.
The practical exercises are designed to support the content of the lecture
course - the notes you take will help you understand the operation of an
Ethernet
LAN and an IP network, they are
not to be submitted for marking.
Network Commands
Commands you will be using:
You may find out more about each of these commands by looking at the manual
pages of sandbox or a suitable UNIX workstation.
